Getting Started

myWeb is a portion of the myFolder file storage system for use by all students, faculty, and staff at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. myFolder allocates space for you to store private documents as well as create an individual Web site. Please be sure you read the "Web Page Usage Policy" noted on the main myWeb page (http://myweb.unomaha.edu). The "How To" and FAQ sections answer such questions as how much space is alloted, how to access myWeb, etc.

Please direct questions to ITS Customer Services at 554-4357, or mail to unohelpdesk@mail.unomaha.edu.

Known Issues

Following are known issues when using myWeb:

Windows users must use the Internet Explorer browser to access myFolder/myWeb.

Macintosh users with OS X (all versions) cannot use Internet Explorer to connect to their myWeb. Please see information and instructions here.

Linux users need to follow these instructions in order to access myFolder/myWeb.

How To
ITS does not provide e-mail, phone or in-person support for building individual web pages. The myWeb system has links on the main page to resources to assist with building web pages. Many free tutorials exist on the Internet that will show you the basics of web page production. Free software can be downloaded from many of these same sites.. Microsoft Word, available in each ITS computer lab on campus, can be used to produce your Web pages. The following is basic information to be aware of:

1. People will be able to view an individual web page by using the following web address: http://myweb.unomaha.edu/~username where username is your UNO NetID username (used for myUNO, myFolder and myMail). Just because you put files in the public_html, doesn't automatically give people the ability to see them - they can't just "browse" the folder and see everything you have. YOU still have to provide people with a way to see what you have to offer.

2. When viewing an individual web page from a browser, these pages are "read only": no one, including you, can make any changes while viewing from a browser. You make updates through the "public_html" folder within your myFolder.

3. Filenames placed in the "public_HTML" folder must not have spaces or unusual characters in them.

4. Actual creation of the pages can be done in one of three ways:
- Create them directly in the public_html folder
- Create them on the computer desktop, then "drag and drop" them into the "public_html" folder
- Create them in Frontpage, save them, then 'Publish' the website per instructions here:

5. If you use Microsoft Word to create the pages, the first page created should be your "home" page and be "saved as" "index.html" regardless of the method noted above.
