Getting Started

Weboffice is a means to access departmental folders and files over the Internet. The server involved (Whitesands) provides departments with 40 GB of web-based storage space for their folders and files and various documents in a secure, backed-up location accessible from a home computer, on campus, or anywhere else that has Internet access. This service is available by either joining the UNOMAHA domain network, or by sending a request to the ITS Customer Service Office. This request must come from a responsible faculty or staff member in the department and include the UNO NetID usernames of those who will be accessing the file storage area. The FAQs and information below can answer such questions as how much space is alloted, how to access the folder, and how data is stored and backed up.Please direct questions to ITS Customer Services at 554-4357 or unohelpdesk@mail.unomaha.edu.

System Requirements
Weboffice is accessed by surfing to http://weboffice.unomaha.edu. Use your UNO NetID login name and password to enter. Your computer must meet the following system requirements in order for this service to work properly:

PC: Microsoft Windows XP or Vista with IE6 or higher. No Java or cookie requirements. Minimum screen resolution 640x480. You will not be able to access Weboffice with browsers such as Mozilla, Netscape, Opera, etc. IF YOU USE AOL AS YOUR ISP, we recommend that you connect first, then switch to the Internet Explorer browser that's part of Windows to ensure a quality session.

Use the following link to check your computer's browser information: http://weboffice.unomaha.edu/bd.asp
Mac: OS/X users can attach via the operating system tools; OS/9 users can attach via FREE 3rd party tools. See the FAQ below concerning Mac connection for more information.

Known Issues

As of publication of this documentation (subject to change), these are the known issues when using weboffice:

Linux users:

Linux users are advised to use one of the following methods to connect to their myFolder:

In each instance below, replace <unonetid> with your own UNO NetID

1. As a mounted drive volume:

mount -t smbfs //whitesands.unomaha.edu/Office /mnt/point -o username=<unonetid>/UNOMAHA

mount -t smbfs //whitesands.unomaha.edu/Scratch /mnt/point -o username=<unonetid>/UNOMAHA

then cd /mnt/point and you should be directly into the desired folder.

Warning: if you use myFolder as a mounted drive volume, your information is not encrypted over the network when accessed in this fashion.

2. As a FTP-like interface:

install SLIDE, a java-based webdav client - see http://jakarta.apache.org/slide/webdav-client.html

3. As a Web browser interface:

Using the K Desktop Environment (version 3.2) and Konqueror, a file and web browser

webdavs://weboffice.unomaha.edu/Office
webdavs://weboffice.unomaha.edu/Scratch

Usage Notes:

The most feature-rich and IE-compatible method is to use Konqueror under KDE 3.2 -- it supports drag & drop, SSL encryption and functions mostly like Webfolders under Microsoft IE. You can, however, use previous versions of KDE/Konqueror, but it occasionally will have some "quirks", like directories that appear as file icons. You can also gain read-only access to weboffice from any browser by referencing https://weboffice.unomaha.edu/usr/<unonetid>.

How To
So, how do you actually use weboffice. Using one of the browsers noted above, type http://weboffice.unomaha.edu in the address bar, then hit "Enter." You should arrive here:

Click on the "Login" button and enter your UNO NetID username and password.
Click on 'OK' and you should arrive at a screen looking similar to this (without the red boxes and arrows):

The Departmental Storage Area (O:\ drive) is only for faculty, staff and authorized student workers. Click on the file folder icon to enter your department's storage area. NOTE: You will see only the folders to which you have been granted access.

The Temporary File Transfer Area (X:\ drive) is a place to put files that you want to transfer from one computer to another but that may be too large for a floppy or ZIP disk, or CD. NOTE: These files are deleted weekly.

You can also access your personal home directory storage area (H:\ drive) from this page.

If you have authority to do so, you can also add or delete members from your particular group by clicking on the Group Management icon in the lower right of the page.

All files and folders located in the weboffice are backed up to tape storage nightly. If need arises to retrieve a deleted file or folder, please contact ITS Customer Services at 554-4357 or e-mail to unohelpdesk@mail.unomaha.edu.

OK, so now you have documents stored in a web-based storage area. To work on them in the future, navigate to weboffice using the instructions above. Double-click on the document you wish to modify, and it should open up in the program that was initially used to create it. Make whatever changes you need, then save it back into the weboffice storage space.

That's it............pretty simple! If you have any questions, please contact ITS Customer Services at 554-4357 or unohelpdesk@mail.unomaha.edu.
