myMail AntiSpam User Guide

Getting Started

The first time the MyMail Anti-Spam quarantines an e-mail intended for you, the system sends a greeting message with a subject line of “User Quarantine Account Information.” The greeting message contains the following information:

Welcome to the UNO myMail Anti-Spam. This message contains the information you will need to access your Spam Quarantine and Preferences.

Your account has been set to the following username and password:
Username: <your e-mail address> or <your UNO Net ID>
Password: <your UNO NetID Password>

Note: You can also access your Spam Quarantine directly at http://antispam.unomaha.edu by using your UNO NetID to log in.

Quarantine Summary Report

The myMail Anti-Spam sends a daily quarantine summary report to review the quarantined messages. From the quarantine summary report you can also add messages to your whitelist, delete messages, and have messages delivered to your inbox. The following figure is an example of a quarantine summary report.

Accessing the Quarantine InBox

The easiest and preferred method to access your daily quarantine is to click on the link at the bottom of a Daily Spam Quarantine Summary. You will not be prompted to login.

Logging In

To log into your Spam Quarantine Inbox with out a Spam Quarantine Summary:

Go to https://unomail5.unomaha.edu. Result: The login page appears.
Enter your Net ID (username and password), and click Login.

*Note: All of the login information was provided to you in the myMail Anti-Spam Greeting Message.

When logging in to your Spam Quarantine Inbox for the first time, click “Accept this certificate permanently. You will not be prompted with this request after the initial login.

Quarantine InBox

Acting on individual messages
Selecting the Deliver, Whitelist, or Delete links on the right of each quarantined message will perform the action for that item only.

Deliver - Delivers the selected message to your e-mail inbox.
Whitelist - Sends selected messages to your inbox and adds the sender(s) email address to your whitelist allowing future messages to go directly to your inbox.
Delete - Deletes the selected message from your quarantine list. You cannot recover messages you have deleted.

Acting on Multiple Messages at Once

Select individual messages by clicking the check box in the left column:

Alternately, all messages on the page may be selected by clicking the master check box to the left of the ‘Time Received’ header:

Clicking any of the bulk processing buttons (Deliver, Whitelist, Delete, Classify as Spam, Classify as Not Spam) will carry out that action on all selected messages.

Classify as Spam - Explicitly adds information to the myMail Anti-Spam Filter but does not add the sender’s information to your personal Blacklist. (see section on Blacklist)
Note: myMail Anti-Spam has a learning engine that learns how to deal with future messages based on the ones you classify as spam and not spam. The learning engine becomes more effective over time as you teach the system how to classify messages and as you set up rules based on your whitelist and blacklist.
Classify as Not Spam Does not deliver any messages, but adds the sender/content to the myMail Anti-Spam Filter. This does not add the sender’s information to your personal Whitelist. (see section on Whitelist)
Note: Some bulk commercial e-mail may be considered useful by some people and spam by others. Instead of classifying bulk commercial e-mail, it may be more effective to add it to your whitelist (if you wish to receive such messages) or blacklist (if you prefer not to receive them).

Quarantine Preferences

Enter the Preferences screen by clicking the Preferences tab. This tab can be used to modify your quarantine and spam settings, and manage your whitelist and blacklist.

Enable/Disable Quarantine:

To Enable or Disable the Quarantine:
Click on Quarantine Settings Tab
Set the desired option by Enable/Disable
Click Save Changes. The default is set to YES.

If you select Yes, the myMail Anti-Spam will block messages and quarantine them for review in the quarantine summary reports.

If you select No, all messages will be delivered to your e-mail inbox with the subject line prefixed with [QUAR]: The myMail Anti-Spam administrator can modify this prefix.

NOTE: If you plan to be away from your computer for more than five days AND you will not be checking your e-mail during that time, you may want to set the Quarantine to 'Disabled' before you leave. This will help prevent 'missing' any messages that you may indeed consider to NOT be spam e-mail.

Notification Frequency:
This is the frequency the MyMail Anti-Spam sends you quarantine summary reports. To change notification options, set the desired Notification Interval and Save Changes. The default is daily.
The Anti-Spam filter only sends quarantine summary reports when one or more of your e-mails have been quarantined.
If you select Never, you can still review quarantined messages from the quarantine website, but you will not receive quarantine summary reports in your email.
Notification Address - The e-mail address the myMail Anti-Spam should use to deliver your quarantine summary report.

Default Language:
This is the language in which you want to receive your quarantine notifications.

Enable/Disable the Spam Filtering:
The myMail Anti-Spam also gives you the option to Enable/Disable Spam Filtering. Select the Spam Settings tab, set the option and Save Changes.

Select Yes for the myMail Anti-Spam to scan your e-mails for spam.
Select No to have all your messages delivered to you without being scanned for spam.

Whitelist:
The myMail Anti-Spam can be instructed to allow mail from a specific Sender or Domain.
Select the Whitelist/Blacklist Tab.
Enter the address or domain you wish to allow.
Click the Add button.

Notes:
The only time the myMail Anti-Spam blocks a message from someone on your whitelist is when the message contains a virus or a disallowed attachment file extension. (myMail Anti-Spam will block all attachments ending with a .pif, .scr, or .vbs extension)
To remove an email address from whitelist click the trash can next to the persons email address.
If you enter a full address, such as jsmith@uno.edu, then just that user is allowed. But if you enter just a domain, such as uno.edu, then all users in that domain are allowed.
If you enter a domain such as uno.edu, all subdomains are also included, such as my.uno.edu, help.uno.edu, or calendar.uno.edu, etc.
Email containing attachements with the following file types will be sent to your Quarantine Inbox rather than your regula email inbox.
adeadpbasbatchmcmdcomcplcrtdll
exehlphtainfinsispjsjse lnkmdb
mdemscmsimsp mstpcd regsctshbshs

Blacklist:
The myMail Anti-Spam can be instructed to Block mail from a specific Sender or Domain.

Select the Whitelist/Blacklist Tab.
Enter the address or domain you wish to block.
Click the Add button.

Note:
The myMail Anti-Spam immediately discards messages from senders on your blacklist. These messages are not tagged or quarantined and cannot be recovered. The sender does not receive a notice the message was deleted, and neither do you.
The only time a blacklisted e-mail address is delivered is if the same e-mail address also appears in your whitelist.
To remove an email address from blacklist, click the trash can next to the persons email address.

Tips for Specifying Addresses for Blacklist:

Only enter addresses that occur frequently. It only wastes your time to enter an address that you receive email from once or twice.
If you enter a full address, such as jsmith@uno.edu, then just that user is blocked. But if you enter just a domain, such as uno.edu, then all users in that domain are blocked.
If yu enter a domain such as uno.edu, all subdomains are also included, such as my.uno.edu, help.uno.edu, or calendar.uno.edu, etc.
Spammers often forge the email addres to disguise where their spam truly comes from. Be careful when blocking domains. For example, if you get tired of all the junk mail that supposedly came from @yahoo.com, don’t block the yahho.com domain if you have friends who have yahoo accounts. You’ll never receive their email.
